A new Toi Mai report will lay out remuneration guidelines for local government when they are engaging with Ngā Toi Māori (Māori creative sector). It will establish an industry benchmark for price standards for the works ringatoi Māori (Māori artists) create, the same as you have a price structure for architects or engineers, for example.
The report will build on insights from the wānanga held with ringatoi Māori in February and further contributions from those working in the industry.
The price standards will reflect the time taken to create the taonga and the mātauranga that informs their creation and will be particularly useful for younger ringatoi Māori who often struggle to get adequate financial recognition for their work. The report is due for release later this year and is a key action coming out of the Ngā Toi Māori Industry Development Plan, Toi Ora, Tāngata Ora; Toi Ora, Whenua Ora, published by Toi Mai in October 2024.
