IT professional pathways

Toi Mai has completed a review of its suite of qualifications covering IT professional pathways and more general digital skills, as guided by the Te Wao Toi Whanui workforce development plan (WDP) for Enabling Technologies. The review process for all qualifications involved extensive consultation with providers and industry stakeholders.

Levels 2–4

The Level 2–4 qualifications, titled ‘Computing User’, initially focused on enhancing digital literacy and using targeted technologies to enable productivity.

These qualifications have been retitled ‘Digital Technologies’ to reflect contemporary terminology and broaden their relevance across personal, community, and employment contexts.

Key updates to the suite include broadening scopes of applied technologies to support a range of possible employment contexts and provide pathways into professional IT training.

Changes at Level 4 also respond to feedback around the need for more opportunities around application of digital technologies to organisational innovation and productivity as alternatives to the more technically oriented IT pathways.

Levels 4–6

The review of Level 4–6 qualifications respond to the evolving needs of the digital technologies sector.

Key changes include more flexible qualification structures that support learner mobility, work-integrated learning and clearer pathways into employment.

Notably, at Level 5, a new single diploma with strands in Infrastructure, Software Development and Applied Digital Technologies replaces multiple existing diplomas, consolidating core skills while allowing for specialisation.

Key changes at Level 6 include a cleaner pathway in Software Development between Levels 5 and 6, and new certificate that enables recent graduates and industry practitioners to deepen their expertise in targeted areas through industry-aligned practical learning.

The suite has also been updated to reflect globally recognised competencies from the Skills Framework for the Information Age (SFIA).
