Barbering skill standards development

Following on from our review of the New Zealand Certificate in Commercial Barbering (Level 4) [Ref: 2115 v3], Toi Mai – in consultation with industry – have developed six barbering skill standards to align with programmes leading to the qualification. Based on feedback from the qualification review, the skill standards have been written to ensure they align with current and future industry skills.

Find the skill standards below:

  • Perform initial barbering techniques (Level 3, 25 credits)
  • Perform Beard and moustache shaping services (Level 3, 10 credits)
  • Perform wet shaving services (Level 4, 20 credits)
  • Perform haircutting and styling services (Level 4, 35 credits)
  • Perform commercial barbering operations (Level 4, 15 credits)
  • Perform professional barbering services (Level 4, 15 credits)

These skill standards will replace the unit standards in commercial barbering programmes of study. The skill standards will be listed with the qualification conditions. See the skill standards matrix below.

Other existing barbering unit standards will be considered and reviewed separately.

These skill standards have considered the feedback and insights from the national barbering review hui in 2024. Toi Mai have worked with providers and industry to ensure the skill standards emphasise practical skill requirements, specify services and techniques, include commercial business operations and communication and cultural competency.

The matrix demonstrates the mapping of the skill standards to the qualification outcomes, including reference to existing unit standards.
