New Zealand Certificate in Commercial Barbering Level 4 review

Toi Mai, in collaboration with industry and providers, has reviewed the New Zealand Certificate in Commercial Barbering Level 4 [Ref: 2115].

Proposed changes

Strategic purpose statement 

  • Amended to clarify graduates’ employment pathway and removed ‘standalone operators’ as wording may be interpreted as limited to sole traders.

General conditions for programme

  • Amended to strengthen cultural competency skills to ensure ākonga (learners) can demonstrate an understanding of te ao Māori, Pacific peoples, and work effectively with diverse client groups. 
  • Addition of professional standards, skills and behaviours expected of commercial barbers.

Graduate Profile Outcomes (GPOs) 

  • GPOs updated to align with current industry practices and increased from three GPOs to five GPOs. Credit weighting adjusted across five GPOs.  
  • Separated consultation from services for a new GPO 2 and included a new business practices GPO 5. 

Programme Guidance document 

  • Developed draft Programme Guidance document to provide information to programme designers to support consistent delivery.
