Drama (Acting) qualifications review

E hiahia ana mātou te rongo i tāu e whakaaro ai – we would love to hear from you!

We are currently reviewing qualifications in Drama and would like your feedback on proposed draft qualifications. The following qualifications have been reviewed:

  • NZ Certificate in Drama Level 4 [Ref: 3415]
  • NZ Diploma in Drama Level 5 [Ref: 3428]
  • NZ Diploma in Drama Level 6 [Ref: 3429]

The qualifications were created in 2017 as part of the mandatory review of qualifications in Performing Arts and were listed alongside qualifications in Dance and Music. The review was overseen by a specialist advisory group consisting of representatives from the sector and of providers currently offering programmes leading to the qualifications.

Proposed changes across the qualifications

  • The qualifications have been retitled from “Drama” to “Acting” as this identifies more accurately with the practical training leading to these awards and the professional identity of graduates.
  • The strategic purpose statements have been amended to clarify the focus on screen and live performance in the qualifications, as well as the levels at which graduates are expected to operate.
  • GPOs have been amended across the suite to better reflect required competencies for graduates in a range of performance disciplines and fields, including performance and ensemble skills, personal wellbeing, and professional practice. The amendments also more clearly articulate progression between the qualifications at different levels.
  • General conditions for programmes have been updated and grouped under subheadings for Programme Design, Practical Experience and Professional Standards. These statements are to assist programme developers and reflect a strengthened emphasis on the integration of te ao Māori and other cultural perspectives.
