Te Ao Tūroa Unit Standard review

Level 3

16076   Demonstrate knowledge of natural resources important to Māori in te ao tūroa 

16078   Demonstrate knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the Treaty of Waitangi and its relevance in te ao tūroa 

16079   Demonstrate knowledge of food practices in te ao tūroa 

16080   Select, plan and establish a camp site in te ao tūroa 

16081   Demonstrate knowledge of practices associated with fire in te ao tūroa 

16084   Demonstrate knowledge of the importance of water in te ao tūroa 

Level 4

16075   Manaaki others in te ao tūroa 

16077   Practise local iwi and hapū tikanga and kawa in te ao tūroa 

16083   Plan and obtain consents for a hīkoi in te ao tūroa 

26037   Demonstrate knowledge of kaitiakitanga in te ao tūroa

16083  Plan and obtain consents for a hikoi in te ao tūroa 
26037  Demonstrate knowledge of kaitiakitanga in te ao tūroa 

 

The following standards have been reviewed and updated: 

16078  Demonstrate knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the Treaty of Waitangi and its relevance in te ao tūroa. 
16084  Demonstrate knowledge of the importance of water in te ao tūroa 
16081  Demonstrate knowledge of practices associated with fire in te ao tūroa 
28510  Demonstrate knowledge of and operate under a framework of kaitiakitanga. 

 

The following new standard has been developed to replace 16080: 

New – Plan and carry out a haerenga in te ao tūroa

These changes have been made to make the standards more relevant and to meet the needs of a wide range of ākonga: 

16078 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the Treaty of Waitangi and its relevance in te ao tūroa 
    • Updated references to Article 2 to read “rangatiratanga” 
    • Added an outcome about impacts of breaches of article 2/rangatiratanga 
    • Updated resource list to remove some old written resources and replace with website links. 
16084 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the importance of water in te ao tūroa 
    • Updated references to “polluted” and “safe”, replaced with “healthy” and “unhealthy” water. 
    • Updated ranges and replaced “in accordance with local iwi and hapū” with “from the perspective of tangata whenua”. 
    • Removed outcome about conserving water as this lacked relevance and was already covered in the outcome “Practice safe and respectful use of water”. 
16081 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of practices associated with fire in te ao tūroa 
    • Renamed “Demonstrate practices associated with fire in te ao tūroa” 
    • Updated ranges and replaced “in accordance with local iwi and hapū” with “from the perspective of tangata whenua”. 
    • Have updated outcomes and performance criteria.  Removed “participate in karakia” and replaced with “Identify purpose of the fire”.  Added hangi, heat and cooking to range practices.  Added fuel gathering to preparation.  Included “restore area” with “safely extinguish fire”.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of and operate under a framework of kaitiakitanga. 
    • Renamed –to “Apply kaitiakitanga in te ao tūroa”. 
    • Removed outcome referring to environmental sustainability. 
    • Added PCs for identifying individual relationship with te ao tūroa, significance of caring for the outdoor environment including reciprocity, preservation and guardianship. 
    • Added resources.
