New opportunities for screen-sector workforce in proposed qualification and programme

Toi Mai has developed a new qualification and programme for screen, the next step in the journey towards the thriving Toi Pāho (screen sector) workforce first envisioned in 2023’s Te Wao Nui o Toi, the sector’s inaugural workforce development plan.

The proposed New Zealand Certificate in Screen Industry Craft Skills is a 60-credit, level 4 qualification designed to equip ākonga (learners) with practical skills for a range of below-the-line roles in screen production.

The development of this qualification follows the Introduction to the Aotearoa New Zealand Screen Industry micro-credential developed and listed by NZQA earlier this year.

In answer to the call from industry for more practical, work-based learning, the proposed qualification is designed for workplace delivery, with practical experience being gained through work on screen productions. The certificate contains five strands: arts, logistics, production, technical and post-production. Ākonga will gain the qualification in one of the strands with a focus on a particular role.

Toi Mai has also developed a programme to lead to the proposed qualification. This programme sets out industry’s expectations for delivery by providers, including the use of the new proposed screen craft skill standards.

Through the programme, ākonga will gain 15 credits from the Introduction to the Aotearoa New Zealand Screen Industry micro-credential, the remaining 45 credits gained on completion of two screen craft skill standards in a chosen discipline.

We are seeking feedback on the proposed qualification and its lead-in programme. Contribute to a thriving Toi Pāho by filling out the consultation survey, open until Friday 2 August 2024.
