Toi Ora

Sport, recreation and cultural organisations – activities and places that foster the social, physical and mental wellbeing of the people of Aotearoa.

The qualification-to-career pipeline across the variety of Toi Ora industries is currently failing this workforce.

In the exercise industry, for example, personal trainer graduates enter the industry lacking the skills needed to succeed, and 58% of them fail in their first working year.

Toi Mai has made great strides in tackling these challenges, bringing industry bodies together to collaboratively develop a fit-for-purpose qualifications landscape for the sector.

What’s new

  • Toi Mai has developed new exercise education products to stop the churn and burn in the personal trainer (PT) sector, with too many PT graduates lacking the skills needed to succeed, and 58% failing in their first year. Find out more: Updated quals to stem personal trainer churn
  • Addressing the severe shortage of cultural practitioners, including Māori and Pacific conservators and curators, is the focus of a new Toi Mai workforce development plan (WDP), currently under development. Cultural practitioners in Aotearoa are in high demand to manage and care for the thousands of national and significant taonga across the motu, but they experience a significant workforce shortage, with the 2023 Census identifying just three Māori conservators and two Pacific, and 60 Māori curators and 20 Pacific. • Toi Mai is engaging with archivists and librarians to discuss the sector’s training and workforce needs – current and future – and identify challenges, opportunities and growth areas, including AI. The Toi Mai Librarian and Archivist Workforce Development Plan and consultation details will be published on the Toi Mai website in due course. If you would like to be kept informed on when the WDP has been published, email [email protected]
