Celebrating Ngā Taonga Tākaro qualifications

Ngā Taonga Tākaro qualifications make sure traditional Māori games passed down through generations are kept alive by growing skills, knowledge and leadership for whānau, hapū, iwi and communities.

The Level 3 Certificate is being offered through national private training provider Te Mahi Ako, who delivers and assesses the programme in practical, hands-on settings.

Learners who are actively engaged with their iwi, hapū or Māori organisation participate in and lead activities such as hakariki, kaipara, kī-o-rahi, kuku-mamau, manu pakanga, pipi, ruru-nei, tauronarona, tī-uru, poitoa, matimati and rākau. The games range from traditional Māori wrestling and a tug-of-war style game to swinging and catching a poi and playing with knucklebones for quickness and movement.

Ngā Taonga Tākaro are so much more than games, explains Rosalie Reiri, Toi Mai Te Kahu Ahurea – Strategic Māori Advisor.

“They are taonga tuku iho, treasures passed down through generations, carrying whakapapa, mātauranga, and the joy of play. This qualification sits within the Ngā Taonga Tākaro suite of qualifications, which together provide a strong framework for expressing identity, strengthening cultural practices, and ensuring that these traditional games continue to thrive.”

Reiri says each game is an entry point into connection, storytelling, and movement – reminding us that learning can and should be fun.

“What sets this programme apart is the way it weaves together the philosophies of kaitiakitanga, uaratanga, whakapono and whanaungatanga.

“These values guide how taonga tākaro are understood, taught, and played – ensuring that every activity upholds tikanga, builds relationships, and strengthens cultural identity.”

“Completing this programme is not just about gaining a qualification. It is about becoming a kaitiaki of Ngā Taonga Tākaro – someone who can lead, teach, and inspire others through play. It is about whānau laughter on the field, tamariki learning new skills, and communities reconnecting through ancient games with a modern heartbeat.

“At its heart, this qualification is about celebrating culture, keeping traditions alive, and most importantly, having fun together.”
